On Oct. 30, 2012, Hurricane (Super Storm) Sandy made landfall just south of Atlantic City, N.J. The storm delivered a crushing blow to residents, businesses, and the utilities that serve them. Part of any utility's responsibility is staying abreast of technology that enables more effective service to its customers. Technology can help anticipate, plan, and prepare for emergencies and can help inform decision-makers during both scheduled and unscheduled events. Technology can also help communities and utilities recover and rebuild more quickly after disasters. Both a geographic information system (GIS) and a global positioning system (GPS) are technologies that made a dramatic difference for New Jersey American Water (NJAW) leading up to, during, and after Super Storm Sandy.
