Berrendero and Carcamo (2012) cleverly showed how the quadratic discriminant classifier is a springboard for creating a new type of classifier, namely the tangent classifier. Their new classifier is based on a simple desideratum, namely a linear classification rule is desirable because it makes it easy to interpret the contributions of various predictors.
