MGIL Maximizes Value Of Mud Logging

Richardson, Tx.-For every well drilled, some description of mud gas or ditch gas returned from circulating drilling fluids is recorded. These records can range from simple observation of gas bubbles in the mud, to mathematical expressions and scientific rationale designed to identify and characterize hydrocarbon show characteristics. While much has been achieved with mud gas data over the years, it now often finds itself a poor cousin to contemporary wireline logging tools, with the new generation of logging-while-drilling tools further taking center stage in bore hole data acquisition and formation evaluation. Because of uncertainties and misinterpretations resulting from dynamic drilling and subsurface lithological variables, contemporary mud logging gas data sets-al-though generally always collected-have seldom been employed to evaluate the formation. Consequently, the emphasis of mud logging has shifted away from its original aim of formation fluid recognition to play a greater role in well site safety. In fact, well safety issues, and not formation evaluation during drilling, have become the main drivers keeping the term "mud gas logging" in the industry's active vocabulary.
