Midland, TX.-A five-well pilot project was implemented at the SACROC Unit carbon dioxide enhanced oil recovery project in Scurry County, Tx., in 2005 to demonstrate the ability of cost-effective, fit-for-purpose intelligent well systems to reduce unnecessary cycling of CO_2 between injecting and producing wells, optimize sweep efficiency, increase oil production, and improve ultimate oil recovery. The intelligent well technologies and work processes used at the SACROC Unit are applicable to all enhanced/improved oil recovery field development plans, and in particular to CO_2 water-alternating-gas (WAG) developments. The smart field technologies are applicable to layered, compartmentalized and complex reservoirs, particularly for patterned secondary and tertiary flood processes. Initial results show that CO_2 production can be significantly reduced while maintaining economic oil production. The intelligent well equipment also allows selective testing and stimulation of zones within a well without slick line and electric line intervention.
