摘要

As operators increasingly go after unconventional reservoirs, thinner sands and smaller reserves with tighter economic margins, drilling will have to become more cost efficient while preserving the integrity of the reservoir by reducing formation damage. Formation damage is one of the industry's most persistent and perplexing catch-22s. A hydrocarbon-bearing zone has to be penetrated by the bit to produce the hydrocarbons, of course, but the hydraulic and mechanical forces created during the drilling process can damage the reservoir's ability to flow economic rates of oil and gas. In the future, as new technologies are employed in novel ways, formation damage, associated drilling problems and flat time will simply go away. When that happens, unplanned events will no longer be a routine part of every drilling schedule, and wells will reach total depth faster and safer, while being cheaper to drill and achieving higher initial recovery rates.
