Well Test Highlights Benefits Of Real-Time infrastructure in Land Drilling Operations

The land drilling industry's ability to capture lessons learned in drilling previous wells often exceeds its ability to effectively apply those lessons in real time at the well site. Volumes of carefully collected information too frequently end up in a "black box," where its utility to ongoing drilling operations is marginalized. For decades, offshore operations have made use of this drilling information through real-time infrastructures. Adoption of these systems has been limited on land, however, because of the constraints of smaller budgets as well as operational differences. A field test of a computerized, real-time system on a land rig successfully shows how affordable, real-time infrastructure can be implemented onshore, and provides new insights into its advantages for land drilling. The increasing complexity and cost of land-based drilling operations places a growing importance on mitigating risk, reducing nonproductive time and improving drilling efficiency. Achieving these performance enhancements on a land well site often depends on creating a real-time infrastructure that supports and leverages new and innovative technologies.
