Federal Statutes Hold Key To ESA Listing Fight

Stopping federal regulators may be just as fanciful as deterring death or taxes, but leaders of a property rights group told the Independent Petroleum Association of New Mexico that U.S. statutes themselves hold the key to blocking government overreach. Addressing IPANM's annual convention, held Aug. 9-10 at the Sandia Resort and Casino in Albuquerque, Dan Byfield, chief executive officer of American Stewards of Liberty, and Margaret Byfield, the group's executive director, extolled the virtues of coordination, and described the role it played in blocking U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service from listing the dunes sagebrush lizard as endangered under the federal Endangered Species Act.
