If American voters judged President Obama's attitude toward domestic oil and gas production solely on his campaign rhetoric, they could be forgiven for concluding it had evolved through the years. However, while Washington conventional wisdom mostly seemed to hold the president's renewed proposals to hike taxes on oil and gas industry as dead on arrival, most politicos also acknowledged the symbolic importance of including them in the administration's fiscal 2014 budget. To many in the oil and gas industry, the message was loud and clear: in a line from the rock group, The Who: "Meet the new boss; same as the old boss."
