摘要

Acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) is a severe complication of critical illness, carrying a mortality rate approaching 40%. As critical care providers, we carry images of those with this devastating complication who either succumbed to it or were left with substantial physical and psychological limitations. The call for research studies aimed at further understanding biologic mechanisms of ARDS and testing interventions directed toward ARDS treatment and prevention is therefore not surprising . Unfortunately, there are few tools available in our medical arsenal to treat or prevent ARDS. This is certainly not due to a lack of effort.
