CAN ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE BE OF HELP TO PSYCHOANALYSIS ... OR ... VICE VERSA?

In our view Al may be another "return to Freud" who wrote the project when the word synapse had not even been coined yet (Strachey, 1966). The similarities between Freud's model and connectionism are quite obvious; the ultimate objectives are the same; some of the presuppositions in terms of structure, energy use, and minimization are alike. The logic for understanding psychological and neurological parallel processes such as memory, attention, cognition, personality, and symptoms or illnesses is largely shared. Differences are mostly based on paradigmatic scientific and cultural contexts, with FreUd working with a limited mechanical model (he uses repeatedly the metaphor of the communicating vessels, for example) and the new theorists using an advanced computational communications model. It is interesting to see the congruence of some current philosophical theories with the computational paradigm: we refer to postmodern calls for dismissal of centralized cultural, logical, and political domination and for the allowance of multiple cultural hubs providing form to a rather chaotic world system. One of the largest influences in postmodernism is of course psychoanalysis with its challenge of conscious logic in human motivation. This is not a minor point of convergence between psychoanalysis and con-nectionism.
