Back from the dead

Who killed the electric car? That was the question posed by filmmaker Chris Paine earlier this year in his documentary charting the demise of General Motors' EV1 electric car in the US. According to Paine, the EV1-a high-performance vehicle with a range of more than 100 miles and a top speed of 80mph - was eventually buried by the combination of a cynical motor industry (including, ironically, GM itself), oil companies, weak state government in California and uninterested consumers.
