Don't envy the French taxpayer

For an expert on nuclear power, Paul Spare's attempts to reassure us about decommissioning were inexplicably full of errors (Letters, PE 11 January). A figure of £50 million to decommission a French nuclear power station is nonsense. EDF's estimates were £160 million in a 2003 OECD report (£l60/kW at the report's exchange rate), which matches the decommissioning liabilities of £8.5 billion in the company's most recent financial statement.
