The expansion and development of London seems to come in waves. In the 19th century the population exploded from one to six million as it reaped the rewards of the British Empire. Then in the inter-war years of the 20th century the capital sprawled into the surrounding country as Londoners aspired to more green, suburban homes. Another growth spurt has just begun. An exhibition aimed at creating a public debate heralds this latest expansion as the biggest since the "Metroland" days in between the wars. Hosted by the New London Architecture (NLA) initiative, it highlights some 200 megaprojects under way in the capital.
