Assessing Genetic Variation Among Pinot Noir (vltis Vinifera L.) Clones With Aflp Markers

The clonal variation among 70 Pinot noir (V. vinifera L.) clones displaying various phenotypes (cluster architecture, maturity, canopy growth) was studied implementing 178 AFLP-markers in a replicated design. A "most common" genotype, identically fingerprinted, could be assessed comprising 17 (25.7%) of the Pinot clones tested. The largest group of 48 clones (68.6%) was analyzed within the range of 99% genetic similarity compared with the main identical group. A group of 24 clones could be situated farther than 1% differentiation: among 99.1 to 94.0% genetic similarity. No phenotype-specific marker for cluster architecture could be identified within the range of the chosen markers, nor could a common geographical origin be determined for the clones under study. It appears that Pinot noir displays both intra- and interclonal variation.
