Women's Inheritance Rights, Household Allocation, and Gender Bias

We study the impact of improving women's property rights mandated by the 2005 amendments to the HSA. Using the 2004-2005 round of the IHDS, and employing a DID strategy, we find that the amendments positively impacted Generation I women's years of schooling. We do not see this mirrored in her children's education. Our results indicate that educational attainment for boys decreases significantly in households with a treated mother.
