Education is often thought of as the primary vehicle through which human capital is transmitted from one generation to the next. Identifying the size of the intergenerational educational dividend is thus critical for estimating the social impact of policies that are intended to increase educational attainment. While a large research literature studies the within-generation effects of education on life outcomes such as earnings (Acemoglu and Angrist 2000), crime (Lochner and Moretti 2004; Machin, Olivier, and Vujic 2012), fertility (Black, Devereux, and Salvanes 2008), mortality (Lleras-Muney 2005), and subjective well-being (Oreopoulos 2007) and finds large effects, comparatively little research examines the intergenerational effects of education on the life experiences of the subsequent generation-that is, the children of individuals who receive an increase in education.Among the research that studies the intergenerational effects of education, the primary focus has been on the intergenerational transmission of human capital, as proxied by earnings and education. Consistent with the expectations of many observers, research has uncovered strong evidence of an intergenerational effect of education on earnings (Solon 1992,1999; Oreopoulos, Page, and Stevens 2006) and educational attainment (Angrist and Krueger 1991; Schmidt 1996; Acemoglu and Angrist 2000; Lleras-Muney 2002; Currie and Moretti 2003; Black, Devereux, and Salvanes 2005; Oreopoulos, Page, and Stevens 2006).
