Surface Cleaning for Suedes

The first prespotting technique to use on suedes before drycleaning or wetcleaning is surface cleaning or abrasive spotting. This technique uses one or more abrasive spotting tools: the abrasive strip, the abrasive block, the steel-wool pad, and the sandblaster. Never use any of these tools on smooth leathers; use them only on suedes. The first tool for abrasive spotting to consider is the abrasive strip. It is a medium-grit carbide emery cloth that comes in rolls or sheets. Rolls are easier to work with, since they don't have to be cut into strips to make usable pieces (see photo); pieces can be torn off of the end of the roll easily by hand. The cloth-backed emery material is far more durable than sandpaper, and the medium grit normally permits good soil removal with minimum risk of damage.
