The pressing or finishing of gar-ments is simple and entails only three things: First, a fabric is relaxed with steam. Second, the fabric is placed under tension. Third, the fabric is dried in that position-under tension. Originally, garment finishing was done with a heated piece of hot metal called a sadiron. They were heavy and took on heat from a stove designed for heating irons. Generally, several irons were used at the same time, since they quickly lost their heat and their ability to dry garments. While one was used, others were heated.
