Coming Unglued: Hems And Cuffs

Most hems and cuffs on suede and leather garments aren't attached with thread, they're glued on with soluble glues. Manufacturers use this type of hem because it's easy and cheap compared to sewn-in hems and cuffs. Unfortunately, soluble glues dissolve in drycleaning and to a lesser degree in wetcleaning, causing hems and cuffs to come loose in the process. The leather cleaner must reglue these hems and cuffs to restore the garment to a useable condition. If you cleaned the garment, you'll have to reglue the loose hems and cuffs at your shop. This can be done easily using simple, time- and labor-saving techniques, plus a solvent- and water-resistant glue. Choose a glue that will hold the hems and cuffs in place permanently through all future drycleaning and wetcleaning processes.
