Load classification for wetcleaning suede and leather garments is based on the type of leather, its color or color combinations, and the weight of the garments and any cloth trims. First, separate suedes from painted leathers. Painted leathers can lose their finish and color if wetcleaned longer than five minutes and exposed to excess mechanical action; suedes won't. Painted leathers can be cleaned with less than a five-minute cycle. The second classification is color. This is accomplished by separating suede and leather garments into light colors and dark or bright colors to avoid contact between these items in wetcleaning. Though some products can stabilize colors, it is a good practice to wetclean lights and darks in separate loads. The third classification is weight, based on the type of skin used to make the leather or suede. Lightweight items made of sheepskin, lambskin, deerskin and other heavy skins shouldn't be wetcleaned in the same loads as stiff, heavyweight cowhides and pigskins.
