The overall aim of the bio fuels industry is to produce a drop-in liquid fuel that has properties similar to conventional gasoline, diesel or jet fuel by thermochemical and catalytic means. However, partially upgraded renewable oils could be used as a drop-in blending component for liquid fuel if they have properties similar to conventional home heating oils (HHO). The Northeast (NE) region of the United States depends heavily on petroleum-based heating oils. The aim of this work is to study the feasibility of using feedstock types abundant in the NE to produce renewable oils that can be used in HHO. Different feedstock types will produce fast pyrolysis bio-oils with varying chemical compositions and physical characteristics. Subsequent hydroprocessing of these bio-oils is required to modify properties and produce useful blending stock. We will report a detailed chemical characterization of renewable HHO derived from feedstock types abundant in the NE USA.
