Oilfield produced water (OPW), is designated the wastewaterncarried out of an oil well by oil after its separation from oil in thenprimary separation process. Produced water is a mixture of organicnand inorganic materials. The major organic compounds of producednwater include: dissolved and dispersed oil compounds, productionnchemical compounds.1 Most studies are focused on the analysis ofnspecific chemical composition, toxicities and other environmentalnimpacts of produced water.2,3 There are very little data in thenliterature regarding the chemical compositions contributable tondissolved COD of the produced water. The ultrahigh resolution andnmass accuracy of FT-ICR MS provides molecular masses accurate tonwithin 1 ppm, which often enables the determination of molecularnformulas by mass measurement alone.4 The technique provides a toolnwith the power to examine individual molecules within DOM ofnproduced water. In this study, the molecular composition of DOMnfrom produced water was characterized, and the transformation ofnindividual DOM molecules during biodegradation was revealed usingnESI FT-ICR MS.
