Aqueous Zr-nitrate solutions containing appropriate amounts of Fe(NO_3)_36H2O and Al(NO_3)_3.6H_2O were used to synthesize ZrO_2-Fe_2O_3 compositions (up to 40 mol/100 phous phase was produced after pyrolysis, which sub- sequently crystallized to a single-phase Zr(Fe)O_2 solid solution (or Zr(Fe,Al)O_2ss) that appeared cubic by X-ray diffraction, but tetragonal (c/a→1) by electron diffraction.
