It is somewhat ironic that a man born in the foothills of the Adirondacks-and with a mountain in his name-has, in his career, contributed to major scientific technological advances that reach to the deepest depths of the oceans. Born in 1929, Robert Everest Newnham entered the world of William Everest and Dorothy Mae in the Mohawk Valley town of Johnstown, N.Y., an area rich in history from the time of the French and Indian wars. His was a relatively simple childhood, with memories of picking strawberries, hiking, sleigh rides in the winter, and growing up with sister Mary Lucy, born in 1930.
