摘要

3Y-TZP containing AI_2O_3 platelet reinforcements were fabricated by suspension processing and pressureless sintering to >95% of theoretical density. The effect of platelet size on the green and fired microstructures was determined. There was improvement in mechanical properties using smaller platelets, but loss in fracture strength using larger platelets. Part I of this two-part series on the suspension processing and microstructure and mechanical properties of Al_2O_3-platelet-reinforced 3Y-TZP described the processing and characterization of the composite material. Green and fired densities and porosities of the composites were studied, the latter using mercury intrusion porosimetry.
