Chrissie notes: All the sizes listed above-for the cakes, cake rounds, rods and dowels, etc.-can be varied based on your cake design. For example, if you can't find a 1/4" diameter threaded rod, it's fine to substitute something else, as long as it is sturdy enough to support the finished structure. Same for the decorative chain and the support system-the weight of your hanging cake will depend on the type of cake you bake, number of tiers and other factors. You may require a different hanging support system other than the t-bar clips. See the note on hanging a cake at the end of this tutorial.
