Improved molten aluminium level determination at Elkem's Mosjoen foundry

When Elkem Aluminum A/S in Mosjoen, Norway, decided to expand the automation capabilities of the COMPASS (Computer Assisted Casting) system installed at its 120.000 t/y plant, the company thoroughly evaluated all types of inductive, capacitive and laser sensors. Installed as part of a five year modernization effort in 1992, the COMPASS system helped make the plant one of the most modern in Europe. Now, since customer demands for quality were becoming more stringent, Elkem needed to increase the productivity, yield and quality of its casting operation.
