In September 1996, Comalco began the construction of a liquid pitch pumping and transfer system, as well as a paste plant to supply pitch to an extension of its aluminium smelter, located on Boyne Island. In making this decision, Comalco performed a feasibility study to compare the cost, payback period, timing, and environmental compatibility of various insulation materials. Comalco involved Bellis Australia Pty Ltd, one of Australia's largest suppliers of insulation for industrial applications, to help select the proper insulation materials for the liquid pitch plant and the transfer facilities (fig. 1).
