747s Galore

The double-deck 747 concept, essentially two stacked 707 fuselages, was detested by Joe Sutter, 'father of the 747'. When he moved to the program, the duo-decker with six-abreast seating was considered a fait accompli. He called the designs "turkeys," because of their limited use for cargo and emergency evacuations, and poor aesthetics. When the cross-section was widened to about 20ft (6m), double that of the 707, seating went to ten-abreast with twin aisles, as well as twin cargo containers side-by-side in the belly. This new layout alleviated the need for a full-length double-decker.
