The young man informed me that he had recently received his private pilot's license and had been working a lot of overtime to get the money he would need for his commercial and instrument ratings. He looked about the same age I was when I became an air traffic controller and, to be perfectly candid, his enthusiasm brought a smile to my face. There was so much I wanted to say to prepare him for what I knew lay ahead, but instead, I said simply, "Don't expect to have a house like this for many years; perhaps never. Be prepared for the hurricanes that will most certainly come ashore, constantly forcing you to battle for your career. It is not an easy profession to break into and even harder to stay there—trust me." He told me he understood, but I don't think he really did.
