EADS terminated the AIRBUS A340 program following two years without a sale. Both the four-engine A340 and twin-engine A330 were launched in 1987 and shared the same basic airframe, with the A340 aimed at very long 'thin' routes under the ETOPS rules of the day. Those parameters evolved to permit twins to cover almost all global city pairs. A total of 380 A340s was built at Toulouse between 1992 and 2010, comprising 28 -200s, 219 -300s (pictured), 34 -500s, and 99 -600s.
