It was a magnificent day to fly. Springtime always seems to turn a man's fancy to romance, and what better way to celebrate than taking your best girl flying on a crystal clear day, and in a brand new airplane at that. The year was 1967, and I was piloting a factory fresh Piper Cherokee 180C climbing through 3,500 ft. over eastern Long Island while preparing for upcoming dual cross-country flights on my way to a Private License. Don Wilson, my faithful instructor, was in the right seat and accompanying us on this flight was my high school sweetheart who always enjoyed riding along. "Say Mike", said Don quizzingly, "would you guys like to join the 'Mile High Club'?" "'Sounds interesting", I said as curiosity beckoned. "What is it?" "Well, that's a club for anyone who's ever flown over 5,280 ft. above ground level," he replied, "and they'll give you a special pin in the Flight Office if you tell them about it when we get back."
