To reduce operating costs, the Fort McMurray Airport Authority and its architectural team chose several passive and active systems for its new international terminal, which opened in June 2014. The result is that its energy consumption will be 30% lower than the minimum requirement for energy-efficient designs set by the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE).
