NIGHTTIME AIRCRAFT NOISE CAN TRIGGER CV DEATHS WITHIN TWO HOURS, STUDY FINDS

A Swiss study reports that it has demonstrated for the first time that loud nighttime noise from airplanes can trigger a cardiovascular death within two hours. The risk of a cardiovascular death increases by 33% for night-time noise levels between 40 and 50 decibels (LAeq) and 44% for levels above 55 decibels (LAeq), the study found. It was conducted by researchers from the University of Basel, the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute (Swiss TPH), and partners. They compared mortality data with acute night-time noise exposure around Zurich Airport between 2000 and 2015. The results of their study were published in the European Heart Journal, an international, peer-reviewed journal that serves as the official journal of the European Society of Cardiology.
