The COVID-19 pandemic disrupted the entire aviation industry, including major impacts to construction at airports. While passenger traffic was plummeting in March and April 2020, airports were forced to consider what to do with construction that was already underway or planned for the future. At Denver International (DEN), as passenger traffic dropped to an all-time low, the leadership team evaluated the airport's ongoing Capital Improvement Program (CIP), a $3.5 billion program launched in 2018 to address current and future growth and make necessary updates to DEN's 25-year old facility. Ultimately, it was determined that DEN must continue to move forward with its CIP in order to prepare for future growth that likely will resume once the pandemic ends.
