TUCSON INTERNATIONAL AIRPORT PAVES THE WAY WITH A TRANSFORMATIVE AIRFIELD SAFETY PROJECT

With an original airfield that opened in May 1952, four years before construction began on the nation's first interstate freeway, it's no surprise Tucson International (TUS) was among the first identified for improvement under FAA's Runway Incursion Mitigation Program. But, once identified, it took just 26 months to go from official Notice of Intent to the Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) Record of Decision. As those in the industry know, that's about half the time the process normally takes. This was an EIS in which FAA was not only a partner, it facilitated and shepherded the entire process from beginning to end.
