The Engine Alliance (EA), a joint venture between General Electric and Pratt & Whitney, has received certification from the European Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) for a more powerful variant of its GP7200 engine. The company's latest offering, dubbed the GP7272 and GP7272E, is designed specifically for the Airbus A380 and offers up to 72,000lb of thrust. The firm has also introduced a series of enhancements to the engine to improve the durability of its high pressure turbine in hot and sandy environments. The modifications, which can be installed by the operator, are aimed specifically at carriers such as Emirates, which has a fleet of 50 EA-powered A380s.
