Sydney Airport Celebrates its Centenary

On April 18,2011 Sydney's Kingsford-Smith Airport celebrated the 100th anniversary of the first flight made from the site. New Zealander, Captain Joseph Joel Hammond took off from what was then the Ascot Racecourse in a Bristol Box-kite biplane on a journey that lasted less than ten minutes. Speaking at a ceremony to mark the anniversary, and where a plaque com- memorating Captain Hammond's achievement was unveiled, Russell Balding, CEO of Sydney Airport said: "Captain Hammond was obviously a man with an adventurous spirit, but I doubt he could have foreseen how Australia's aviation industry would develop over the next 100 years.
