The political and civil unrest in the whole of the Balkan region over the last 20 years has stifled commercial aviation - both on the business and tourism sides. However, as the situation has now calmed down, airports and airlines alike are trying to catch up on lost ground. Due to the outbreak of the civil wars between 1992 and 1995, commercial aviation in the former Yugoslavia virtually ceased and this severely damaged the industry locally. For a while, a complete no-fly zone was established and enforced by North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) forces. It addition to the damage caused by the civil war, various United Nations (UN) sanctions imposed between 1992 and 2000 also had a serious impact on the national economy.
