The 65-year history of Jakarta/Soekarno-Hatta-based Garuda Indonesia reads very much like a fairy tale. Today, the flag carrier operates a fleet of more than 115 aircraft to destinations across Asia, Australia, Europe and the Middle East. It has also picked up a host of accolades including: 'The World's Most Improved Airline' (2010), 'Best Regional Airline in Asia' (2012) and 'World's Best Regional Airline' (2012) in the Skytrax World Airline Awards, along with the Sydney-based Centre for Asia Aviation's award for "Airline Turnaround of the Year" (2010). However, these prestigious achievements disguise the fact that the carrier spent much of the early 2000s on what it claimed to be "the brink of failure".
