Indonesia is not only the largest Muslim country in the world; it also has the fourth-largest population (252 million people) behind China, India and the USA. Less than 20 years ago few Indonesians could afford to fly and the nation's transport infrastructure were struggling to keep pace with the demands being put upon it. There was a lack of good roads, reliable train services and suitable modern ferries to serve the communities across the 17,000 islands that make up the Indonesian archipelago.
