The Lockheed U-2 is perhaps the best-known reconnaissance aircraft, famous for its exploits over, or close to, territories hostile to the US. The bold and provocative operations by CIA-flown U-2s over the Soviet Union epitomised the rivalry between America and the USSR during the early years of the Cold War.
