OVER A period of seven days, USAF F-35As from the active-duty 388th and Reserve 419th Fighter Wings (FW) at Hill Air Force Base, Utah, visited nine different countries on three different continents. The 421st Expeditionary Fighter Squadron (EFS) deployed 13 jets to Spangdahlem Air Base, Germany, as part of a European Theater Security Package and has since operated from Italy, Spain, Finland, Norway and France. The F-35s and members of the 421st and 466th Fighter Squadrons (FS) arrived at Aviano Air Base, Italy, on May 23, and participated in Exercise Astral Knight, before transitioning to Spangdahlem on June 11 for the duration of their summer-long deployment. This is the first deployment for the 421st FS, the USAF's latest F-35A squadron. Meanwhile, the 4th EFS is currently still flying in support of the US Air Force Central Command mission at Al Dhafra Air Base in the United Arab Emirates.
