End of Scope 'Creep' Forces MAC Revisions to MRJ70

There is significantly more than a name change from the MRJ to the Space Jet as intransigence over scope clauses has forced Mitsubishi Aircraft Corporation (MAC) to alter the size of its aircraft.The major problem for both MAC and Embraer in developing their new generation of smaller regional jets has been scope clauses and the importance of the North American market. In developing the MRJ90 (now the M90 SpaceJet) and the MRJ70 (now the Ml00 SpaceJet) there was an expectation that scope clauses would be relaxed, something that has not occurred. While the MRJ70 was light enough to meet the 86,0001b MTOW limit, in a two or three class configuration the number of seats was less than the optimum 76 seats. This lack of movement in scope clauses has forced a stretch to the Ml00 with an extra 1.1 meters being added with the cabin length increased to 1.6 meters allowing for an additional two rows of seating allowing for 76 seats in three classes and 88 seats. The redesign means that service entry is now likely to be in 2023 rather than 2022. Embraer meanwhile is simply selling more of the existing El75 rather than pushing the E175E2. The Ml00 SpaceJet is now much better placed to meet the requirements of the much-changed scope clause landscape.
