ADS-b is an advanced surveillance technology allowing an aircraft to constantly broadcast, over a dedicated radio link, its current position and altitude, category, airspeed, identification and whether it is turning, climbing or descending. It is a much more accurate system than today's radar and provides a capacity for reduced separation and greater predictability in arrival and departure times. It is an important part of the US's Next-Generation Air Transportation System (NextGen) and Single European Sty Air Traffic Management Research Programme (SESAR)-two major programmes aimed at modernising air traffic management (ATM) systems over the next 20 years. ADS-B's great advantage is that it provides real-time surveillance and situational awareness simultaneously to pilots and ATC facilities. This can help improve the safety, capacity and efficiency of the airspace system and the US's Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) estimates that ADS-B applications in the terminal environment will save $1.5bn for commercial aviation through 2035.
