N220AU was a special aircraft from the day McDonnell Douglas started building it (although when it was first built it did have a different name, N101AA). As only the second DC-10 ever built, it was a key part of the type's certification programme and the manufacturer kept the test aircraft for seven years. In 1977, when McDonnell finally sold it, N220AU continued to push boundaries. Along with its new owner, a certain Freddie Laker, it helped revolutionize the way people took holidays. Before Laker Airways came on the scene few people in the UK travelled abroad. By cutting fares, and making air travel affordable, Laker changed the aviation market forever.
