A survey by the British Airline Pilots'Association (BALPA) late last year found that 56% of 500 commercial pilots admitted to being asleep while on the flight deck and, of those, nearly one in three said they had woken up to find their co-pilot also asleep. The study came alongside news of two pilots on a British longhaul flight falling asleep in the cockpit at the same time, leaving the aircraft flying unsupervised on autopilot. Multiple lawsuits and fines, as well as (thankfully) rare fatigue-caused accidents, such as the crash of Colgan Air flight 3407 in 2009, illustrate the complex and emotional topic of crew rest periods.
