Lufthansa signs for airberlin assets and seeks Alitalia routes

Lufthansa Group is moving to expand and deepen its European footprint by taking over assets and routes of bankrupt carriers Alitalia and airberlin. The German company submitted an offer letter expressing interest in establishing a "new Alitalia," in mid-October, just days after signing a $249 million deal to take over a large part of airberlin's assets, including NIKI and regional carrier LGW.
