ON JULY 21, just hours after the landing of the final space shuttle mission, the friends, family, and colleagues of the late astronaut Gus Grissom met in his hometown of Mitchell, Indiana, to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the flight— and sinking—of his spacecraft Liberty Bell 7. Grissom, along with astronauts Ed White and Roger Chaffee, died in 1967 when the Apollo 1 command module they were testing caught fire.
