From The Spring Of 1925 to the fall of 1929, a handful of extraordinary airmen-explorers competed with one another in a series of spectacular flights that made headlines around the world and filled in the last blank spaces on maps of the Arctic and Antarctic. The era opened as Richard E. Byrd, Roald Amundsen, Lincoln Ellsworth, Umberto Nobile, and George Hubert Wilkins vied for the honor of being the first to fly over the North Pole. When Byrd claimed the achievement, other teams completely traversed the Arctic, linking Alaska and the Norwegian island of Spitsbergen by air.
